It is extremely fortuitous (jammy even) that when Helen Cormack owner of wallpaper and fabric company Tissus D’Helene asked me to style a Japanese window (at the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour) that she had chosen a collection of wallpapers in an orange and grey colour palette. Part One of my Marmalade and Slate interiors recipe was well underway as a blog post so it neatly dove-tailed with this trend – just love it when that happens! *Orange, often associated with 70s style interiors, is taking on an altogether sophisticated warmth this Autumn in a perfectly balanced partnership with cool slate greys. From linens to wallpapers to lighting and paint there are some really refreshing new interior designs. It is a colour combination which will ensure that your room is as cosy as you wish it to be in winter and has all the necessary vibrancy and light for summer living too.
Sizzling summer style
Dark interiors aren’t just for hybernating in winter months – honest! The inky tentacles of dark interiors are reaching far and wide into the world of interiors this summer. Like the *LBD in fashion, accessorising with black in an interior decorating scheme – often acts as an anchor and adds more than just a little understated chic. No longer associated with ’80s black ash furniture – from achingly stylish terraces of Juan les Pins to patios in Pinner – dark decorating is creating a summer scene.

My celebration of Indigo blues culminates with this summer’s Preppy take on Indigo. It is almost as if the fashion and interiors industries sat down and considered the colours of the The Leander Club in Henley for their summer collections! The Leander Club is one of the oldest rowing clubs in the world, has produced many of GB’s great rowing Olympians and its members sport a rather jaunty rowing blazer and cap in – you guessed it – pale pink (traditionally known as ‘cerise’) and Indigo. With the Royal Regatta imminent (Weds 28th June to Sunday 1st July) what better time to see how everyone from high street fashion to interior decorators, textile designers, restaurants and bars are embracing Preppy style.
Well before the UK design community had reconsidered Moroccan pattern and encaustic tiles as desirable for the home, Karen Kennedy, owner of Indigo Rye had them up as the surround to her reception desk in her hairdressing salon. Hanging above the desk are a couple of punched metal Moroccan pendent lights from Liberty. Not only that, but Niki-Jones home cushions sit on window seats either side of the front door to the salon and literally scream ‘come inside’ to the passers by of Berkshire and Oxfordshire. At least they do to those of us sensitive to exquisite decorative home accessories … !
As the seasons change, do your ideas on how you wish to decorate your home alter a little too? Do you adopt a bit of a squirrel mentality and find yourself stockpiling various homely items to line your nest for the winter months ahead? The Autumn/Winter ’16 interiors ‘Global Fusion’ trend is definitely one for those with strong hibernating instincts but also for those who want their home to reflect a little of far away places too…
Summer is the perfect time to splash out on new towels. A summer holiday may be pending; you might also be one of a growing number of people who take part in ‘wild swimming’ (rivers/lakes/sea) where a big new fluffy towel might be just the ticket after an invigorating outdoor swim. A new set of towels for your bathroom will not only give it a mini makeover, but will make you feel a little bit more fantastic too! So here, to help your summer go swimmingly well – and in no particular order – are my top 10 towel suggestions:
There is a new interiors trend a-brewing in the UK which is much less hassle than a ‘basement dig’, less costly than a ‘bespoke wine cellar’ and although you won’t triple the value of your house, it is potentially a lot more fun …
Chances are if you are choosing tiles for a bathroom or kitchen this year, like me you may be lured by the explosion of both pattern and colour available. Continue reading “Tile story”
