Heritage style with a twist

Heritage interior style with its old school sustainable approach to interiors is a perennial favourite here at blog HQ. At its core, it encompasses an appreciation of traditional craftsmanship and design history. Not only am I drawn to the work of some top interior designers who do this look so well but also by some new ingredients that are giving it a 21st-century twist.

It isn’t a trend in the traditional sense

The beauty of heritage style interiors is that it is a look that is individual and doesn’t become an instantly recognisable trend. Heritage interior design schemes sustainably embrace existing personal objects, fabrics and antique or pre-loved furniture. All of which expresses a more personalised and distinctive look.

Heritage style with a twist: the ingredients

The twist comes with the addition of traditional designs sometimes quirkily reimagined. This can be with accessories or colour palettes, to new upscaled patterned wallpapers, soft furnishings and tiles.

Heritage style interiors re-imagined

Reid and Wright have launched their new twist on 18th-century fret-cut mirrors finished in bright bold glossy paint finishes. Perfect for injecting a little energy into a space. Whilst John Lewis have made heritage style one of their lead Autumn/Winter 25 interior design themes. This collection includes a continuation of their reproduction bobbin armchair (a third of the price of an antique version) and lighting designs.

Repurposing antique furniture such as chests of drawers into basin consoles, styling beds with traditional eiderdown quilts in contemporary fabric designs to finding rare antique furniture in quirky designs are just some of the ingredients to seek out.

There’s a crop of both new and old heritage wallpaper designs that have been catching my eye. And not forgetting too the legacy idea of quirky-shaped yew topiary, inspired by my recent Scottish odyssey!

I love this ‘Whitby’ twisty design, available as wallpaper and fabric by US designer Nathan Turner, who is new to the showroom at Tissus D’Helene, London.

Damascas Standard Abalone parchment or grasscloth wallpaper by Totty Lowther who has a great eye for creating interior designs with a twist. You may remember I featured Totty’s work previously on my blog: Pomegranate design for Lewis & Wood.

Parker and Jules fabric and wallpaper designs do heritage with a twist so well. This was an emerald green scheme they styled for St Patricks Day back in the spring.

There is nothing more glamorous and tailored than a bed made with a traditional eiderdown. This is founder Fiona Sherlock Smith’s fabulous design for her company Flo’s Eiderdowns using a smart contemporary stripe. (You can also read more about stripes in Top Stripes on my blog).

Key to heritage style with a twist

The key to the effectiveness of this homely style is that, whilst it is trimmed with a light touch of humour, a scheme should still maintain the authenticity of time-layered heritage.

Design Social Pop Up London

I am rather looking forward to the Design Social Pop Up. It’s an interior design event that runs in a few US cities by the New York Design Center and now makes its debut on 24th and 25th September 2025 at Chelsea Town Hall in London.

The two-day event sponsored by Farrow and Ball is billed as an ‘opportunity for creatives and interior designers to meet some top interiors brands’. UK interior and textile designer Sarah Vanrenen will be doing a talk on 24 September discussing the distinct differences between US and UK projects with US interior and textile designer Meredith Ellis. Designers such as Bloomfield Ink, Milola Designs (who featured on the blog in 2021) and Parker and Jules are amongst those also not to miss.

We can also look forward to UK House & Garden as well as US Veranda and Business of Home magazine editors who will be moderating interiors chats over the two-day event.

    1. Thank you so much for letting me know Rachel. I think this must have happened because I had to alter the original post in its order on the blog and I think the original email to subscribers was deleted in favour of the second posting. If that makes sense? I am so sorry to you and anyone else this has affected but the post is up as you can see.

With very best wsihes, Charis x
