With inspiring art as well as luxurious woollen textile designs and dark wood antiques, Pembrokeshire offers interior design a unique weave of Welsh style. The longish journey to this coastal region of West Wales makes the arrival (and lack of crowds) all the sweeter. You can be assured of incredible colour and light, from textural landscapes with medieval field patterns to pretty wildflower hedgerows and colourfully painted buildings. And that’s not to mention some of the best sandy beaches in the UK …
Pembrokeshire
Because of its gentle landscape and uplifting light, Pembrokeshire has inspired many artists over the years. Today, it is almost as if the textiles and art that have been inspired by the landscape have in turn informed some of the exterior paint choices in places such as Narbeth, Fishguard and St David’s City.
It was lovely recently to return to the ever-lively town of Narbeth with its award-winning food shops, galleries and antique shops displaying some gorgeous Farrow and Ball Bancha green as well as burnt oranges and turquoise exteriors. A great idea to help keep local self-esteem high when towns and villages up and down the country are struggling with the cost of living. I am sure Mary Portas would approve.

Melin Tregwynt woollen mill
Melin Tregwynt has an online shop but there is nothing like a visit to where the woollen mill has stood since 1841. Combine a visit to the factory with a walk to the local beach and either coffee, lunch or tea in the cafe (in addition, they have some covered outdoor tables). And of course finish your visit with some shopping in the mill shop which also includes a few local food and drinks.

Independent bookshops are always a must, especially when they are so inviting.

Solva Woollen Mill, Pembrokeshire
One mile inland from the coastal village of Solva and only a few miles away from Melin Tregwynt is Solva Woollen Mill. Again, it has exquisite Welsh woollen designs with a factory, cafe (serving drinks and cakes) and shop you can visit. They also have a lovely stand-alone shop in St David’s City, Pembrokeshire if you find yourself there.
The styling (which my images don’t do justice to) is fabulous both in the factory and the shop in St David’s. A combination of vintage props from the mill and a good eye really promote their products well.
Don’t forget to make a note to check out their competitively priced woollen runners and stair runners, as they are very nice indeed. Bespoke designs available both at Melin Tregwynt and here at Solva woollen mills.
