Close-ups from London Design Social

Last night, a dinner took place in Chelsea between US and UK/Europe luxury interiors, textile and fabric brands before a two-day, US-organised London Design Social pop-up, sponsored by Farrow & Ball at Chelsea Town Hall in London. By all accounts entente at the dinner (and really not at all surprising!) was extremely cordiale in the world of interiors. And as for interior journalists and the interior design community, the colour palettes, designs and styling ideas on display today have been more than a little inspiring. Here are just a few design and people close-ups of what caught my eye today …

Stylish interiors people from both sides of the pond

|Interior design is such a personal and ultimately meaningful thing and is all about the trust and understanding between designers and their clients. If possible, I like to meet the designer behind a wallpaper or fabric design. Because as you may know, I always love a good story whether it was for brand and interior styling or for magazine articles and Styling Box.

Some designers take inspiration from a deep love of the English countryside and sustainability, to a piece of 18th century Dorset pottery to historical characters and architecture. For some, it is antique Japanese designs, or even their own pottery can be a starting point.

What links many of the designers I talked to today (on both sides of the Atlantic) is that they all had a myriad of other sometimes completely different careers before finally having the chance to create wallpaper and fabrics designs. Like a fine wine, these designs have sometimes been long in the making and, in my opinion, are all the better for it. All are hard-working and passionate about what they do, some juggling young families as they go.

It was such a pleasure to meet some people for the first time today and to hear from two UK interior designers, Berkshire-based Sarah Vanrenen, who had a stall with her own fabric and wallpaper collection, and Lucinda Martin, who was visiting from Shropshire.

I loved chatting to Mia. This is her very new and not on the website yet is this fab teal and coral hibiscus bow/leopard print design wallpaper from Mia Reay. Photo: Charis White
Inspired by the ancient embroidered designs of the Ainu textiles of northern Japan, the original design was used on garments with a spiritual, protective and healing powers by the Ainu peoples. Ainu wallpaper by Mia Reay. Photo: Charis White
Helen Prior is a Brit who has lived in the US for 30 years. She is a ceramicist and textile/wallpaper designer who excitingly is bringing her designs to London for the first time. Helen’s ‘clay to cloth’ process starts with her ceramics. Helen then transfers the designs to textiles and wallpaper. I loved the new Liberty-inspired (her mother used to make patchwork with Liberty fabrics) wallpaper in particular as well as Helen’s ceramics. Photo: Charis White

New Kosmos Eremos block printed wallpaper design by Bloomfield Ink who excitingly won Best Wallpaper Design today from Homes & Garden magazine for their Wild Thing Design. I also loved Emerald’s styling on her stand. Photo: Charis White
Speronella Marsh with her wonderful block print designs onto vintage and antique linens with wallpaper designs. Nothing goes to waste. Ends of wallpapers get used for lampshades and place cards. I promised the very stylish Speronella that I would let you know that her wonderful fabric flower brooch isn’t made by her! She tells me she has an even bigger one. Swoon. Photo: Charis White
